About The Northern Café
The Northern Café
Perched quietly in the arms of the Himalayas, The Northern Café is not just a café — it’s a space born from the land, shaped by the past, and designed with heart. What you see today as a cozy mountain café was once an old cow shed — weathered, rustic, and forgotten. But instead of tearing it down, we chose to breathe new life into it — honoring its history and embracing sustainability at its core. Today, it offers outdoor dining in Bir with Himalayan views, creating a truly unique and soul-soothing culinary experience.
Architectural Essence
Every stone, every wooden beam you see here carries a story. Built with the age-old Himachali Kath-Kuni architecture, the café blends traditional wisdom with contemporary warmth. Locally sourced wood, stone, and mud form the structure — materials chosen not just for their beauty, but for their natural insulation, minimal carbon footprint, and ability to withstand harsh Himalayan weather. This is sustainability in its purest, most rooted form — not imported, but inherited.
The sloped rooftops mirror the snow-dusted Dhauladhar ranges, while wide, handcrafted windows allow light, air, and uninterrupted views of the valley to pour in. Inside, the hand-carved wooden furniture, woven lamps, vintage Himachali art, and little cozy corners invite you to slow down, breathe deeply, and stay a little longer. No loud interiors, no rush — just raw beauty, local craftsmanship, and the kind of quiet that speaks to the soul.
We didn’t just build a café — we nurtured one. Just like a seed that becomes a tree, The Northern Café has grown — carefully, consciously, and with reverence to the culture that surrounds it.
Here, you don’t just stop by for a meal.
You come to soak in the valley’s silence, taste soulful Himachali food, feel the mountain air, and leave with a part of the hills in your heart.
Because this isn’t just a café.
It’s a story. It’s a feeling. It’s home.
Signature Dishes at The Northern Café
At our cafe in Bir, we take immense pride in offering a culinary experience that celebrates the rich tapestry of Himachali cuisine. We were among the pioneers to introduce the traditional Dham—a ceremonial vegetarian feast featuring dishes like Madra, Sepu Badi, and Tudkiya Bhaat—to our menu, providing guests with an authentic taste of the region’s heritage. This Sattvic meal, prepared without onion and garlic, is a testament to the rich culinary traditions of Himachal Pradesh.
A standout dish that has captured the hearts of our guests is Siddu, a traditional steamed bread made from wheat flour and yeast. Often filled with ingredients like khas , walnuts, or apricots, Siddu is traditionally steamed and served with ghee or chutney. Its preparation involves fermenting the dough for several hours, resulting in a soft, fluffy texture that pairs perfectly with the rich accompaniments. Historically, Siddu was prepared during communal activities like paddy transplantation and festivals such as Saawan ka Sajja, symbolizing unity and celebration. Today, it remains a cherished dish, embodying the essence of Himachali hospitality and tradition.
At our retreat in Bir, we offer a diverse culinary experience that celebrates the rich tapestry of Himachali cuisine, complemented by a selection of Italian, Chinese, Tibetan, and Indian dishes. Our commitment to freshness and authenticity ensures that each meal is a delightful journey for the senses.
